My List Building A B C …..

by James Gladwin on June 4, 2010

Do you find building your list difficult? Are you find it hard to get started? Well, often this is because there is a deluge of advice that is overwhelming. So here is a simple primer to cut to the chase and get started.

A is for Autoresponder. I really believe this is a non-negotiable component of a successful list. They come in two sizes ñ those you own outright, and a service for which you pay monthly. I have tried both, and recommend the monthly service. I use Aweber. Why? Because it is a blue-chip operation with numerous features and – this is vital – has a head-and-shoulder reputation with internet service provides. With Aweber, the email gets through.

B is for Building Your List. A successful list takes time ñ at first Partly because of trial and error, when you start. But the learning curve flattens out, and once you have the process licked, and have a raft of new product lined up, you will find that you are an owner of a scaleable operation that can be very, very profitable.

C is for Customer Care. Respect your list members (do you ever have the tiniest suspicion that some list owners just look at you as personal ATMs?) Make it straightforward, even easy, for readers to unsubscribe. Answer complaints or queries promptly. The fact is, mistakes happen and, more often than not, it will be your fault.

D is for Detail. Don't think that just because you have loaded messages into your autoresponder that you can sit back and push the 'Broadcast' button. Does your opt-in sequence work? What about email typos? Does the freebie download link work. Gremlins abound and they need chasing! There is nothing that leads to quicker unsubscription messages than silly mistakes that irritate the reader. And, don't forget that your recipients and becoming more sophisticated and more demanding.

E is for Email – text or HTML? Time was when emails formatted as HTML were unlikely to be delivered, but times they are a-changing. A reputable autoresponder service will give you the choice of formatting your emails either way. I have to say that I will often opt to receive plain text emails. Why? I just like less 'stuff' in my in-tray. Often people don't take trouble to optimise images for quick download either.

F is for Freebie. Or, rather, a high value give away product that will persuade your visitor to exchange their email address in return for your offering. Please ñ don't skimp on this. It pays dividends and really enhances your profile.

G is for 'Great' vs 'Good'. Anyone (more or less) can build a good list. But, you know, a list reflects the values of the owner. And you can choose to be a truly great Internet entrepreneur with a world renowned list. Believe it! Develop standards. Become the template that others emulate. Have a list that readers recommend to others. Make it easy for them to be your ambassador!

H is for Hurry. Don't. I know all about deadlines but, believe me, I've sent too many list messages with embarrassing mistakes not to know. Your readers are patient, but they have limits! Find a yellow sticker, write the words 'Don't Rush' on it and have it on your laptop or PC. I'd rather a email broadcast went out a day late – perfect – than on time but that recipients were shortchanged.

I'll be continuing this – there's more of the List Building alphabet to come!

My best to you.
