One internet marketing challenge that lots of people face daily is how to find a profitable niche?

Everyone says that niche building is THE way to make money online, but where do you start? To achieve the best results, what exactly must you do?

So here are 5 non-nonsense, proven strategies for finding your internet market niche that I have practiced and find highly effective.

1. Move away from the internet marketing niche!

I know, it is completely counter intuitive: "You're crazy – internet marketing is where the gold is!". Just why is this important? Simply this – type "internet marketing" into Google and check out the number of pages devoted to online business building, online marketing and all the variants.

Done that?

Exactly. There are millions and millions and millions of them. To be brutal, if you are starting out, you just don't stand a chance of success in this arena unless you have a really new take. If not, it will be a hard field to plough, with very little hope of return.

So what happens if you follow this tip? You will feel paralysed, at first, because you will feel that there is nothing left to go for. Let me give you an example – when I started my online marketing business, I focused on – you've guessed – online marketing. I wrote info products, I generated blogs and web pages, I contributed to forums and – I got nowhere. Sure, I made one or two sales but they nowhere near covered the time and cost that I and invested.

2. But then someone told me to drop that, and find a niche that was far less competitive.. That's very important because when there is less competition you have a far greater chance of success. And also because when you identify a niche that carries a real need, you KNOW that the market is there.

3. So, how do I find a niche? Simple – go to your junk email folder. The principal reason behind this is that junk email is an evil of our times; it overloads the web, it takes up bandwidth and saps resources.

But junk mail is also a real indicator of what people are interested in. It's also a very good idea because you are not having to do any research – others are doing it for you. Check out your junk mail folder and you will find niche after niche after niche: arthritis, depression, how to chose a RV, how to lose weight, how to run a guesthouse, how to breed chickens, and on and on.

4. Learn from these guys. Don't think for one moment that I am endorsing junk mail in any shape or form, but if you are really stuck for niche ideas, take a look at the trash folder.

And just why is this a good idea? Because you are looking at niches that are "hot" – and I am not taking about the dubious medical emails. I've just glanced at what my mail software filtered for me. "Top Loans", "Cholesterol", "Cell phones", "Bad credit", "Language learning" – the niches are endless.

You don't need to spent time or money on niche research software or endless internet searches.

Is there another reason? Yes – look carefully at the sales copy. Most people admit that writing sales copy is one thing they find hardest to do. But there is sale copy gold in unwanted emails. Don't copy or plagiarise (it's unlikely you will want to do that!) but notice how the benefits of a product or service is stressed and highlighted. Notice the way that the reader's emotions are hooked. You will learn how to write pitch perfect copy..

5. Make a pledge to dominate your niche. And just why is this important? Because once you are seen as an expert, you will be seen to be speaking with authority. Your articles and blogs will carry weight. You emails will be read with interest. And – most important of all – your product or service will be bought!

So, look, give this a try. The online business sector is expanding exponentially – you deserve to be part of it.
My best to you.

Do you find building your list difficult? Are you find it hard to get started? Well, often this is because there is a deluge of advice that is overwhelming. So here is a simple primer to cut to the chase and get started.

A is for Autoresponder. I really believe this is a non-negotiable component of a successful list. They come in two sizes ñ those you own outright, and a service for which you pay monthly. I have tried both, and recommend the monthly service. I use Aweber. Why? Because it is a blue-chip operation with numerous features and – this is vital – has a head-and-shoulder reputation with internet service provides. With Aweber, the email gets through.

B is for Building Your List. A successful list takes time ñ at first Partly because of trial and error, when you start. But the learning curve flattens out, and once you have the process licked, and have a raft of new product lined up, you will find that you are an owner of a scaleable operation that can be very, very profitable.

C is for Customer Care. Respect your list members (do you ever have the tiniest suspicion that some list owners just look at you as personal ATMs?) Make it straightforward, even easy, for readers to unsubscribe. Answer complaints or queries promptly. The fact is, mistakes happen and, more often than not, it will be your fault.

D is for Detail. Don't think that just because you have loaded messages into your autoresponder that you can sit back and push the 'Broadcast' button. Does your opt-in sequence work? What about email typos? Does the freebie download link work. Gremlins abound and they need chasing! There is nothing that leads to quicker unsubscription messages than silly mistakes that irritate the reader. And, don't forget that your recipients and becoming more sophisticated and more demanding.

E is for Email – text or HTML? Time was when emails formatted as HTML were unlikely to be delivered, but times they are a-changing. A reputable autoresponder service will give you the choice of formatting your emails either way. I have to say that I will often opt to receive plain text emails. Why? I just like less 'stuff' in my in-tray. Often people don't take trouble to optimise images for quick download either.

F is for Freebie. Or, rather, a high value give away product that will persuade your visitor to exchange their email address in return for your offering. Please ñ don't skimp on this. It pays dividends and really enhances your profile.

G is for 'Great' vs 'Good'. Anyone (more or less) can build a good list. But, you know, a list reflects the values of the owner. And you can choose to be a truly great Internet entrepreneur with a world renowned list. Believe it! Develop standards. Become the template that others emulate. Have a list that readers recommend to others. Make it easy for them to be your ambassador!

H is for Hurry. Don't. I know all about deadlines but, believe me, I've sent too many list messages with embarrassing mistakes not to know. Your readers are patient, but they have limits! Find a yellow sticker, write the words 'Don't Rush' on it and have it on your laptop or PC. I'd rather a email broadcast went out a day late – perfect – than on time but that recipients were shortchanged.

I'll be continuing this – there's more of the List Building alphabet to come!

My best to you.

<![endif]-->

OK – so you have a mailing list. Congratulations! It isn’t easy but you have made a start. Or, perhaps your list has grown over the months. You’ve a reason to be proud of that growth. But something is wrong, isn’t it? There is a niggle at the back of your mind, and it’s this: my mailing list isn’t making me any money.

But making money online is why you started, isn’t it?

Well, there comes a point when a cool appraisal is needed. I am going to assume that the content of your emails is good. I’ll also assume that your autoresponder plumbing is good too – in other words, you’ve got the opt-ins and the confirmations and the broadcasts all sorted.

So what’s the problem? What is going wrong? Here’s a clue: Do you like being shouted at? No, me neither. But so many mailing lists shout at their receipients. You know what I mean – the uppercase letters. The sales hype. The frenetic effort to get you to click, to click, to click on the link. And, if you’re like me, you pass on.

The thing is this. The tone of voice of the email is all wrong. And the secret of making money online with your mailing list is this: Find Your Voice.

Your voice is the tone of your emails, the mood, the color. I bet if you check your inbox (or spam filter) you will find daily emails that are just plain aggressive. There is not a shred of customer facing skill. Not a modicum of politeness. Or, there are others that are creepy. Over use of your first name and so on.

My experience is that I did not make serious money online with my mailing list until I had the confidence – and the skill – to write genuinely, honestly, and personally to my readers. Until then, I realise with hindsight, I had unconsciously copied the style of online marketers who I thought were successful, and taken on their mannerisms. But, of course, it was fake. And your readers can smell it.

So what changed? Well, one weekend came when I was about to go on vacation. I was in a rush. I had to get my email out. And I wasn’t sure that the product I was recommending was right for everybody.

And that is exactly what I wrote. I said how I was feeling; I shared where I was taking my family; I was honest about my reservations but suggested they take a look anyway.

The result? I had more sign-ups than I had ever received. And what is more, I had responses to my mail out from people expressing appreciation for the way I had been straight with them.

Now, it can take time to “find your voice”. I was lucky. But you can experiment. One experienced marketer I respect always refers to the weather. Another talks about her family. The thing is, you immediately create a bond with your reader that rises above sales and marketing. You are talking to them as you would to a friend, or an old classmate. There isn’t any reason to schmooze, or elbow bend.

If I’m frustrated, I say so. If I’m bored, I let people know. If I’m elated,I share that as well. And try to be as real and authentic as possible about the tip, product, referral or sale that is the subject matter of my correspondence.

So my advice is this: you will make money on line with your mailing list. But you have two options. You can beat people into submission. Or you can attract them by virtue of the authenticity of your voice. And the second group will buy from you time and time and time again. I know which I prefer, don’t you?

My best to you – James Gladwin

<![endif]-->An email list is a terrific way to pre-sell to your customers. After all, these are people who have opted-in to your list (just checking!) because they have bought from you in the past. So, who better to announce your new product or service to?

So here are six tips for dynamic content that will turn your readers into buyers.

First, consider an email that describes the main reason why you wrote, made, designed, or became an affiliate for your product or service. People love stories like these: they gain inspiration from them, and if they are fellow internet marketers, or bee keepers, or bird watchers (whatever your chosen niche is) there will be genuine interest in what you have to say. Write in a normal way as if you were talking to them across a coffee, and allow your enthusiasm to shine through.

Secondly, you can describe a common problem faced by people and show in detail how this product will solve that issue. And (if it’s appropriate) how they could make money by becoming an affiliate. People are time hungry and information that saves time by solving problems effectively is a real winner. Again, personal anecdote or a mini case study adds an extra dimension.

Third, you can share an unusual story. I have an aunt who lives in a remote part of Scotland. She is fiercely independent. Imagine my surprise and delight when I found that one of her sons (my cousin) had set up a remote webcam product of mine which allowed her to check on her chickens and a fierce rooster! No longer did she have to go out in the teeth of a Highland gale. I mentioned this in an email to my list and generated enormous interest – and sales.

Next, why not write about what third parties have said about your product or service? Obviously, this needs some forethought – and make sure they’re genuine: people can smell fakery, but third party endorsements, particularly if they come from respected players in your field) are highly effective.

Fifth – forewarn your list about price increases, or tell them if a product is being deleted or removed. I’m one of those people who often procrastinates when it comes to buying something, and a quick ‘heads up’ can tip me in the right direction.

Sixth: why not publish a contrary opinion – maybe an earlier response from one of your readers – and reply by showing how your product can make a difference. Don’t write in a combative, aggressive way. Keep the tone light and humorous but it gives you an opportunity to re-sell and reinforce the benefits of your offering.

You’ll notice that these are common topics that can be released at any time. They don’t take a lot of forethought and they won’t take a lot of effort. The important thing is that these “triggers” will provide focus and edge. So often a mail out tends to ramble, or read nebulously. If you take any single one of these topics you will have an email that you can send to your list that will convert browsers onto buyers.

My best to you.

Hi again,

I'm writing this on a Friday before a holiday weekend, here in the UK and much of Europe, so I'll keep it short.

If you have a break on Monday I hope the weather's good enough for a BBQ, or that you have time to relax.

Now that Spring is well and truly here, T and I have started our weekend walks again: our last one was along the Kennet and Avon canal. Beautiful scenery, tranquil surroundings, and deeply enjoyable "together" time.

There – that's the second mention of "Time" !

Finding time to get things done – especially in internet marketing, especially if you also have a "day job" which you enjoy, can be the hardest thing.

Me? I'm an "up to the wire" operator: I tend to leave things till the last moment and scrape by.

Or, I put things off and procrastinate until I HAVE to get them done. I must be honest; it's not the most effective way to get through the day!

Which is why I enjoyed a book by Brian Tracey so much.

 It's called "Eat That Frog".

You can find it in Google books, but you can also download it HERE.

(There is nothing to pay; there is no sign-up process to go through.)

It's 124 pages, sold over 500,000 copies and contains 21 great ways to stop procrastinating and get things done.

I enjoyed it. I think you will do.

 Have a truly great weekend.

 Here's the download link again:

<![endif]-->

Are you beginning to build an online business? Do you want an independent income but haven’t got started properly/? Do you dream of a future when friends are envious of what you have achieved as an internet marketer, but feel paralysed right now because you aren’t sure of the first steps?

You aren’t alone: “How do I get started? What do I need to do?” is a question I get asked a lot at the end of seminars or coaching calls. It seems that there is a wealth of information on the web for people who know what to look for, but the fact is: there are many, many people who want a straightforward, no-nonsense, basic information. Well, here it is: a low-level, fast fly-by ‘List building 101’.

You either have a product or service that you feel excited out, or you can find one. If you have your own product, perfect. If not, go to Clickbank, open a free account, and search for a product that matches your interest. (I won’t go into step-by-step instructions here, for reasons of space, and you can find how-to information elsewhere on the web.)

But I strongly recommend that you choose an offer of value and – I hope this doesn’t come as a shock – if at all possible, be prepared to give it away (this won’t apply to a Clickbank product, obviously.) Offering a value product for free is a sure fire way to selling many products in the future. Always keep your focus on the endgame, which a list of responsive customers.

Next, chose a domain name and web hosting. Now, take your time over this. Notice that I recommend chose a domain name after you have decided on the product you are going to offer. That way you can match it closely to the offer. I have chosen too many domain names too quickly and regretted it (and spent money) because I did not think things through carefully and rushed to purchase a name I thought was cool, but which didn’t relate to the product. Not certain who to buy from? Try Go Daddy, or 1and1.

Web hosting comes in two sizes – cheap (with all the pitfalls that go with that), and slightly more expensive (which means you get reliable service.) Ask around, post a query on forums, and you won’t go wrong. I recommend Hostgator.

Next, you need to get a web page sorted. And by web page, I mean squeeze page. A squeeze page is simply a web page whose only job is to collect emails. You know the kind I mean. If you don’t feel this is something you can do yourself, don’t worry. There are plenty of free templates on the web that you can download and tweak. And, if you need a free web page editor, try Komposer.

Keep the squeeze page simple. Introduce yourself briefly, and give four or five bullet points as to why the reader should sign up to receive your product.

Which means you need a system for responding to those emails, and handling your product download. In other words, you need an autoresponder service. This will ensure that your visitors are handled respectfully and receive your product without your having to do anything. But, far more importantly, it means that you will have a list of subscribers who you can email in the future with pay-for offers. And that is the point of it all. I recommend Aweber – you do have a to pay a monthly subscription, but it is a blue-chip operation. You can buy software outright that will provide a similar service, so you will need to balance the higher upfront cost against the monthly outgoing.

Finally, you need to nurture your list. How many times have you signed up for a product you liked from a vendor who came across well, but from whom you only heard from sporadically, and then not at all? Having expended all your energy on getting visitors who sign up to your list, don’t lose them by not following up with worthwhile offers.

I do understand that this can sound daunting. Is it worth it? Most definitely: “Yes”. But you need to take that first step. You can do it!

My best to you – James Gladwin

<![endif]-->

It’s easy to make heavy weather about building a mailing list in order to make money on the internet. There are courses priced at eye watering amounts to download; you can attend expensive seminars hoping to find the magic bullet; there are endless posts on forums about techniques that might deliver thousands of visitors. The information overload is overwhelming. So here are five easy steps to achieve your goal: making money online.

First, imagine that your mailing list is your real estate. Sure, it may be only a bare plot of ground at the moment, but think of your mailing list as your house, and a house that you want to sell. Because your mailing list is selling to your readers.

First – what condition is your “house” in? How good is the roof, exterior walls, and so on. Likewise, how does your mailing list look to your reader? Are your emails formatted attractively? Do you take care over the content? Does it look good? To be frank, are you proud of it?

Next, is your “house” priced correctly? In terms of your list, are you giving your readers a quality offer? Now, you will be the judge of what level of product offer is right for you. Give-aways are a proven way to gain opt-ins and reader loyalty, but make certain that they offer value. Check out quality freebies on marketing forums; search your hard drive for good products that you have lying around with MMR or PLR rights. But don’t offload cheap stuff just because you feel under pressure to provide a freebie.

Third, what is the plumbing like in your “house”. By plumbing, I mean the autoresponder messages that you set up. Take care to test, test, and test again to ensure that your messages do not contain ‘firstname-fix’ errors, that the opt-in system works correctly, and that the download page is linked properly. Why not personalize the templates that may be provided by your autoresponder service to make them more user-friendly?

Fourth, does your “house” have quality neighbors? Is it in a desirable neighborhood? When it comes to your mailing list, you want to consider carefully the recommendations you make, or the web pages that you point your readers to. If you are trying to position yourself as a source of quality material and tips for people who make info products and you point them to a web page that screams “scam” at them, you are going to be in trouble.

Finally, is your “house” well looked after? In other words, do you care for your list? Do you send emails regularly? Do you treat your readers with respect? Do you honor the commitment they have made to you? A reader who has opted in to your list is a nugget of gold whose loyalty needs to be earned every day.

Did I say easy steps? What I have described is straightforward: quality layout, content, offer, systems and referrals. But, like a toddler’s first, faltering steps, they aren’t necessarily always easy. It takes practice and perseverance to get it right, but if you commit to delivering quality, day in and day out, you will build a mailing list that will make you money, week in and week out.

My best to you – James Gladwin

Do you really feel miserable when you log in to your autoresponder service and see that someone, or several people, has unsubscribed from your list overnight? Of course, it may that your email list is so large you don’t notice, but if you are starting out those unsubscribe statistics cut deep. I know when I began my online business my stomach churned when I saw an ‘unsubscribe’ message.

Well, let’s get some perspective. Of course you should expect unsubscribers. I’ve unsubscribed from lists, and so have you. It may be because I am going through a fit of email housekeeping and tidying my inbox; it could be because I am no longer particularly interested in the topic covered by the writer.

But, wait a moment, there are other reasons that I unsubscribe from a list. Here are five of the most important standards that are often forgotten or overlooked. If a newsletter or email series doesn’t meet these quality standards, I will almost always unsubscribe. Are they true for you as well?

First, am I receiving quality emails? Are they attractively formatted, appropriate for both HTML and text readers? Is the writing up to scratch, or are there typos which make it plain the material hasn’t been spell-checked. Do you make sure that your writing is geared to the email format, with shorter paragraphs and line breaks than would be the case in conventional article writing? If you include images, have they been optimised for the web? What is the ‘tone’ of your email? Does your reader feel he or she is being shouted at? Get some honest feedback and find out how others perceive the look and feel of tour communication.

Second, are your email communications believable and trustworthy? Don’t feel that you have to mimic well known internet marketers. If you are endorsing a product, make certain that you do not hype it overmuch. If the product is only aimed at beginners, make that plain – you don’t want a queue of subscribers wanting a refund. If you are a relative beginner, don’t be embarrassed to admit it. People like candour and honesty.

Next, do you email your subscribers on a regular basis? Once you have decided on a mailing schedule, stick to it. When your readers subscribe, tell them that they will get an email from you on a weekly, fortnightly, or daily basis, whichever it is. Woody Allen said that eighty percent of success is “showing up” and the same applies to list building. How often have you signed up to receive emails only to receive them sporadically, and then not at all for a month or two? At first it can seem that you are on a writer’s treadmill, but practice does make it easier to write your newsletter or weekly email.

Fourth, learn to retain your subscribers by including expert opinion or endorsement from readers. When you get positive feedback, include it in your emails. Similarly, see if you can interview a well known internet marketing personality – they can be extremely approachable and often want to help someone starting out. This has certainly been my experience.

Finally, give away good freebies on a regular basis. I believe there is far too much hard selling of mediocre products on the web, so it is a milestone when a marketer I respect gives away a product for free. Generosity will attract and retain your readers; even better, it will encourage them to recommend your emails to others.

So what will stop readers unsubscribing from your list? These five essential factors: quality, credibility, regularity, blue-chip recommendation, and high value freebies. If you can tick all five boxes, you will build a marketing list that others will envy, and which can generate an independent income stream for you for many years.

My best to you – James Gladwin
